On October 20th, 2011 the Direcció General de Protecció Civil and Aeroports de Catalunya carried out a plane crash drill in the Pirineus – La Seu d’Urgell airport.
The video “Un contenidor simularà l’aeronau” [A container will simulate the aircraft] takes as title a sentence taken from the instructions from Civil Defence to the volunteer actors of the drill in which they explain that a container will represent the chrashed plane. This anecdotal detail and the fact that is written in future tense referes to the simulated and programmed characteristic of the facts and to the representational condition of the most iconic item of the action: the crashed airplane. The video interviews try to rebuild the drill from the testimonies of some of its protagonists. The story shows ambiguously the simulated nature of the emergency, keeping it in a gray area between reality and fiction. The intention of “Un contenidor simularà l’aeronau” is to emphasize the complex relationship between reality and fiction of emergency drills seeing them as theater plays with utilitarian purposes that weave different degrees of fictionality that dissolve in the lives of their actors.
